There are many ways to couple learning a language with an activity, but learning Spanish whilst walking the beautiful Way of St James has to be one of the best that there is.

The Camino de Santiago (Way of St James in English) is an old pilgrimage route, which ends in the Galician city of Santiago de Compostela – now a UNESCO World Heritage City. The route passes through some truly stunning scenery, and has become one of the most popular walking trails in the whole of Europe.

This year however, the Way and the city of Santiago de Compostela will attract even more visitors than usual. Why? Because this year is a ‘Holy Year’ - the name given to any year when 25th July - St James’s Day - falls on a Sunday.

Santiago de Compostela will be brimming with cultural and leisure events: music, arts, theatre, cinema, gastronomy, sports, religious celebrations… but there’s an even better reason to choose the city as your base for a Spanish course this year. Anyone interested in learning Spanish will, this year, have the unique opportunity to participate in a programme that combines learning the language with actually walking part of the Way of St James.

The itinerary of this very special programme is divided into 6 stages, which enable participants to discover the different landscapes of lush Galicia, the religious architecture along the Camino, the picturesque villages, the traditions of the region and last but certainly not least, the gastronomy of the area.

Afternoons will be dedicated to interesting off-the-Camino visits. All along the way a teacher–guide will give explanations and seminars about different topics related to El Camino and to the traditions, culture and way of life in Galicia.

Walking the Way of St James is a once in a lifetime experience, and one that will be even more enriched with a native speaker guide to offer insight into the history and culture not only of the Way, but also of the region that it has made so famous.
