Hedging is a long-established strategy in global financial markets. Essentially a way of managing your risks, hedging can be extremely useful if you believe you may fall victim to changes in foreign currency exchange rates. Hedging is best handled by experts, however, because positions can become very sophisticated and a trader needs to keep an eye on market conditions and news in order to make sure that the hedge works in their favour.
Your foreign currency hedging
If you deal in large volumes of foreign currency, you should be using a dedicated broker to help you get the best deal. This broker will probably use hedging strategies to ensure that any possible risks you take are covered – just in the same way that you would insure your home against fire or flood. Instead of buying an insurance policy, the foreign currency trader offsets any risks they are taking on buying one currency by selling another. You may also choose to hedge your foreign currency exposure by choosing to deal solely in that currency for certain areas of your business – securing loans in US dollars for your US business, for example, rather than borrowing money at UK rates and risking foreign currency exchange exposure in the future.
How foreign currency hedging can help you
As a business, you may need to set up an operation in a part of the world where currencies are volatile, or you may choose to outsource some of your manufacturing processes to places where wages and overheads are cheaper. Without foreign currency hedging, these types of business decisions could be much more difficult to take and may not work out at all because the risk of currency fluctuation is too great. A good hedging strategy allows you to move your business forward without the risks that might normally be associated with overseas expansion.
