Driving in Crocs

Postby Alison » Tue May 10, 2011 9:10 am

I'm coming back to Spain next month for a few weeks whilst I try to sell my apartment and will be spending a few days on the road. A friend recently told me that there had been a change to the law whereby you can't wear flip fl;ops whilst driving. I wondered if this applied to Crocs or other types of sandals ?

As far as I am aware the driver has to have a heel strap on whatever footwear he/she is wearing. Not sure why.

The reasoning here being that a pair of soft-soled footwear, without a strap at the back, could easily catch at the heel and bend under on itself if you had to take your foot off the accelerator and onto the brake suddenly, which could get stuck under the pedal and cause an accident. I can understand their point with flip flops and some sandals, but the Guardia seem to be enforcing this quite strictly and as a result quite a lot of Womens shoes are infact 'illegal' without them even knowing about it.

Without wishing to sound sexist here, a lot of footwear worn by many women could be branded as being dangerous for the same reasons - like most stilhetto heels ...

So does this mean that I can wear Croc's as long as I have the heel strap in place, but that I would be breaking the law if I wore Croc's, but the heel strap was pushed forward / on top on the shoe ?

Rightly or wrongly, that's always been my understanding. However, I keep an old pair of trainers in the boot of the car to change into incase I ever go out somewhere and forget to wear the right shoes, just to be on the safe side.

... So would it be legal for me to drive barefoot instead then ?

No.
The law clearly states that you have to wear "Adequate Footwear".

Thankyou. Now that I have a clearer idea of the law and the resaons behind it I will obviously abide by it. I was just wondering if anybody had actually been stopped and fined for this, or if it was just one of those odd laws that was hardly ever picked up on ?

-So what exactly is it that makes wearing a pair of Correctly sized crocs, with the heel-strap properly fitted "Inadequate" ?
