Importing & registering a British car

Postby SandyBanks » Sat Oct 22, 2011 12:44 pm

Can anybody tell me if it is possible to import and register a Uk vehicle myself, or do I need to use the services of a Gestor or Specialised agency ? - AND, if so, how ?

Depends on your standard of Spanish and the time you have available, together with your patience and proximity to a traffico office

I would say my Spanish is 'passable' - certainly enough to undertand completing forms etc... (assuming that will be enough ?), and I live about 30 mins from a Trafico office.

I know that it is do-able, but the majority of the costs of the operation goes on the taxes rather than the charges of getting Gestor to do this for you, so would only save yourself a couple of hundred euros at the most. By all means, go for it and do it yourself is you are a sado-masochist with too much time on your hands and lot´s of patience. Personally, I would just bite the bullet and pay for it to be done for me and save all the messing about.

Cost and taxes depend on the make, model, and age of vehicle. Get a quote for the costs beforehand then decide whether the costs are worthwhile. I'm sure someone will come up with a contact for you to get up-to-date info. Cost could be up to a couple of thousand euros if the car is relatively new and high spec. As a Spanish resident you won't be able to take the option of importing the car as a personal import.

In order to get an 'engineer's report' and import ITV, one ITV station seems to be as good as another. This should cost around 200 euros and then there is still tax to pay and 20 to 30 euros for number plates.

Brian Deller's book should have a chapter on importing a UK car.

Do you know of a website or publication I can go to in order to find out how much I would be due to pay in taxes for importing my UK car ?

In Spain importation tax is calculated on the new cost price of the vehicle ( according to Spanish book prices ) less a percentage dependent on the age of the vehicle :

1 year 20%
2 years 30%
4 years 50
10 years 80%

Vehicle import duty in Spain is charged at 10% and will be payable on any vehicle being imported into Spain from outside of the EU.

Vehicle import duty in Spain is charged at 10% and will be payable on any vehicle being imported into Spain from out side of the EU (European Union)

AND on top of that you will probably have to pay for new headlamps and a new ITV

Can I not just use the headlight deflectors that they sell for a few quid in Halfords etc... ?

- Not in this case. You can only use headlamp deflector stickers on a temporary basis - they will not pass the ITV test that is required as part of the importation process.
