Ley de dependencia

Hi there, my grandad, is suffering with pulmonary fibrosis, the hospital have said there is no cure and a lung transplant is not an option as he has a pacemaker fitted, anyway he has taken a turn for the worse and now needs a carer as my nan is very ill herself, they both pay volentary into the spanish system, have lived there for 11 years, can they get any help?, with either funding for a carer or equipment as he will now need a hoist and bits, i have read about a new law that has been introduced in spain, 'lay de dependecia', but there was not much info on there, please could anyone help or give me some guidance!!, Kind Regards Jay

Hi Jay,

The first thing you need to do is see the local social worker they will assess and put things into action if they can.

I assume that his case could only get referred to a social worker through a Doctor or some other Medical worker? or could I put his case forward myself?

Hi,

As far as I´m aware you´ll have to see a social worker, at our ayuntamiento you can make an appointment and see one without other reference.

Spaniola's advice is spot on - talk to your Ayuntamiento. You should take a Spanish speaker with you if you are not confident yourself, and be prepared to be patient because the changes to the Ley de dependencia are still relatively recent by Spanish standards.
