UK or Spanish Pension

Postby scooter » Fri Apr 08, 2011 9:23 am

I have a fmily member here in Spain who will turn 65 in a few months time, and has lived in Spain for about 30 years. They were self-employed in the UK and paid around 20 years of National Insurance Contributions, and then set up as an Autonomo and has paid around 12 years contributions here.
Will they be eligible to get a pension from both the UK AND Spain, or just one of them ? OR will his contributions made to the two countries be combined for him to take as one from either country ?

Its not quite as easy as that (and the years given don't seem to add up to me either).
He will need to call HMRC Non-residents dept and explain his situation to them (although, I'm surprised that they haven't been in touch already) If he gives them his UK National Insurance Number they will give him a forecast for him to confirm. Further to that he should do the same with the Spanish Authorities. 12 years is too little to be able to take a pension in Spain, so he should look into exporting these contributions to his UK pension scheme. In effect, this means that he will have paid 32 years contribution, which is enough to receive the standard UK state pension.
