Car Taxes

I'm clear on the legality side of importing my British Car into Spain, but one thing that is not clear to me is this :
I want to run my UK car here in Spain for as long as I can before I legally import it, for various reasons, For one the money, for another I may try and sell it over here before importing. My UK road Tax is due to expire about 3 weeks after I plan to drive it over - is there any obligation for me to pay UK road tax for a vehicles that is not and will not be in the UK ? If not do I have to pay the Spanish equivalent ?

In Spain collecting road taxes is the responsibility of the Town Hall and not the Department of Transport. They also only collect taxes on vehicles that have been legally regsitered in Spain (IE Imported from the UK).
Whilst you won't need to Tax your car here UNTIL you import it, as far as the UK authorities are concerned, your vehicle still needs to be taxed until you tell them otherwise (ie SORN it).

I wouldn't risk it. A couple of years ago the DVLA had a program of coming over to Spain and checking up on all parked UK registered vehicles that they came across : some of those with expired road tax were fined, but I also saw a number being towed away aswell.

Thanks guys, that pretty much confirms what I thought : Not worth risking over a few hundred punds a year.

I admire your sentiments, and it is the proper and right one to have - but you would be surprised how many don't have !
