What Spanish taxes should you (or shouldn't you) be paying ?

Outstanding propety Taxes

Postby pauline » Mon Feb 14, 2011 4:41 pm

<p>My elderly mother in law has a house on the Costa Blanca, which is used very infrequently - 6 or 7 weeks per year at the most. My Husband and I seem to be becoming increasingly more responsible for organising the payment of bills and so on.

My Father in law died around 5 years ago but even before this, we believed that no taxes had been paid for the property for quite some time.

We have received at the property requesting any taxes be paid and are at a loss what to do. We are anxious simply not to ignore the problem as we don't want to be left with an expensive and complicated mess when things eventually do come to a head.

Should we simply go to town hall and ask what we owe?

Don't let this situation darg on and ignore it any more - get a Spanish Gestor or Asesor involved as soon soon as possible as the problem and the taxes that you will have to pay will only snowball.

What do you mean by "Taxes" - Is the Municpal taxes , IBI or the Non-Resident Property Owner's Tax ? ( Or all of them ? )

Judging by the records of recent outgoings for the property (or lack of), I can only assume that it is for both !

In both cases, the taxes are applied to the property and just accumulate until you either sell the property - when they are dedcuted off the final amount - or you eventually pay up. Might be a good idea to get an Asesor to look into it for you to save any nasty surprises in the future.
