Education Cuts

Postby Stacey » Fri Apr 20, 2012 8:43 am

Has anyone or anyone's children been seriously affected by all these education cuts that keep being reported in the press ? I can't see that mine have ( or at least that the school or my kids are telling me about ! )

Because the education budget for schools is managed by the regions it will vary massively across Spain. Then, if you add in the various grants and subsidies that each induvidual school gets from the regions and their municipality for teaching certain subjects - like the regional language - you can undertand that there will be a large variation between the budgets that various schools recieve.

Much of it is down to the goodwill of the teaching staff aswell. My daughter is fortunate at her school because many of the teachers seem willing to do their bit to accept the cuts that have forced upon them without there being too much of a negative effect on any of the kids. I know that other schools in my area have not been quite so lucky though.

My Neice goes to state school in Spain and her school as not been able to afford any heating since the end of January. They are also unable to afford lighting in some classrooms and have stopped the useage of photocopying, and ended all field trips.

My daughter's school is losing 2 teachers at the end of the year, but it would be unfair to suggest that this was down to the school imposing larger classroom sizes. For example, in her year at school there have previously been 2 x classes of 16, but over the last 2 years the numbers have fallen to 1 x 13 and 1 x 14. Previously the year was too large to fit into one class, but now it is.
Of course, there have been certain cuts - such as school trips - but this is down the teaching staff refusing to forego their 2/3 hour lunchbreak in the middle of the day when taking the class away from school. They used to do this withput complaint, but since the education reforms which has already increased their hours, and reduced their rights and their pay, they are perhaps justified in making a stand on this point !

Is really down to how BOTH the regional education authority AND the school in question interpret the instruction from the Central Gov't to "cut costs" - nbot fogetting the goodwill of the teachers in the school. Some will get lucky, others probably will not.

I totally agree Mekon, but I can't help feeling that things are going to get much worse, and Education is likely to get cuts ahead of Healthcare. I can't see there being to much of an issue being made over this so close to the end of the school year, but would imagine that it will all kick off again in September - with serious consequences !

I agree Robster - the summer holiday is always a good time for the government to hide bad news about education cuts etc...

A lot seems to have changed (for the worse !) since this post was originally made and I suspect that most would agree that cuts to education system are now inevitable in all areas of Spain. I can not help but feel that this is a very short-sighted and sad move that can only affect the younger generations for years to come.

Charging a fee for a child to eat their own packed lunch at school must the cruelest and sickest blow yet. How low can the government stoop ?
