Driving lessons

Postby SimonCarter » Wed Mar 09, 2011 2:40 pm

I read many of the articles under the Guides section of the site but was unable to find the answer I was looking for ...

It's my daughter's 18th in a couple of weeks and I would like to buy her some driving lessons. Whilst her Spanish is ok, I know she would be much more confident if the lessons and test were in English. Does anyone have any experience of doing this in the Malaga area, and if so do you have any tips or recommendations ?

Probobaly not the answer you were hoping for, but I'd honestly look into paying for her to go back to the UK and take a week long course of a certain number of lessons, ending with a test. It would probobaly end up cheaper, quicker and easier in the long run.

Isn't there an issue with a Spanish resident taking a UK driving test in the the UK, getting a UK license and being able to use it here in Spain ?

All you need to do is go to your nearest DGT Offices and get the UK license written onto their register so she is recognised as a foreign driver in Spain. It used to be a requirement to exchange your UK license for a Spanish one, but i'm pretty sure this is no longer the case.

I have found a couple of intensive courses, ending with driving test close to where family live in the UK, so It is looking like that may be the best option for her. Thanks for your help.

Do you mind us asking what deal you managed to find Simon ? - The info might be useful to other visitors with a similar issue.

The prices varied depending on the duration of the course (1 week or 2 weeks), the number of lessons per day & week (choices ranged from 20 to 45 hours per week) the accomodation required (in my case, none as my daughter will be staying with family living closeby). The course ends with the theory and practical test. There are a number of different courses, some guaranteed pass, some not. Also - it looks like some of the courses do not offer one-on-one tuition, which seems like a bit of a con, so I would suggest looking closely at the small print.
