Spanish Elections

Postby MickeyB » Tue Apr 12, 2011 8:47 am

I have found that if you contact the electoral registry department at the National Office of Statistics (INE), with your NIE number, somebody will e mail you back to advise you if you are registered with your local town hall to vote in the coming elections. You need to do this in Spanish, so if you wish to do this just copy and paste what I did (below) and add in your own NIE Number (I know it's not prefect Spanish, but I got a result - and if it 'aint broke - don't fix it !)

sede.censoelectoral@ine.es

por favor decirme si es posible para nosotros a votar :

David Cameron - X-1234567-A
Nick Clegg - X- 7654321-B
Gracias

Thanks for the link - I took your advice and sent the e mail. I was surprised to get an answer inmy in-box from them this morning, I would have thought that it would have taken them longer to reply. It seems that as far as they are concerned I AM registered to vote in the coming elections. Let's just hope that my local Ayuntamiento are reading off the same hymn-sheet !

Yes, I have the same concerns. As far as the INE are concerned I am on the electoral register for my Town and at my address- I just hope that this means that the Town Hall concur with this. After all, this is Spain - anything could happen!

A pretty good rule of thumb is that if you were on the electoral register last time, and haven't changed address, then you still should be.

One should remember that it is the interests of Town Halls to have as many voters on the register as possible, and as such they are much more likley to pull out all stops to ensure that you are correctly listed on the register than overlooked.
