The volume of online purchases in Spain continued to increase in the third quarter of 2014, posting a 24.7% year-on-year rise to reach a total of EUR 4.1 billion, according to the latest quarterly data released by Spain's communications regulator CNMC.
There were 57.8 million online purchases in the three months to 30 September, some 24.3% more than in the same period of 2013.
The increase was once again driven by the tourism sector, with travel agencies and air transport accounting for over a third (34.2%) of the total turnover in the third quarter, followed by direct marketing (5.2%) and clothing (4.2%).
Online purchases made by foreign shoppers towards Spanish sites accounted for 8.0% of sales in the quarter, with e-commerce transactions within Spain itself accounting for 36.6% of the total and the remaining 55.5% corresponding to purchases made by Spanish buyers toward foreign sites.
