Balearics tourism crippled by tourism

Thu 11th Feb 2010

The Balearic islands are in danger of losing control of their tourism industry, one expat blogger has warned.

Writing for the Telegraph, Anna Nicholas noted that the regional government has just dismissed its third tourism minister inside two years as fresh corruption claims have come to the surface.

The latest politician to be fired is Miguel Ferrer, who exits office soon after Miquel Nadal, a member of the nationalist UM party who has recently been arrested in Palma on charges of embezzlement.

In a bid to restore order, socialist Francesc Antich, president of the Balearic government, has taken steps to remove all UM ministers from public office while investigations continue.

"With more than 100,000 unemployed and escalating economic problems, the last thing the Balearic government needs now is to lose its grip on tourism," wrote Ms Nicholas.

In a separate post, the expat blogger lamented the strain that expat freeloaders are placing on the Spanish healthcare system, with many European expats using their European Health Insurance Card to gain access to treatment under false pretenses.
