Spain’s Minister for the Interior, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, submitted the report to Congress on Tuesday, which revealed statistics for the year to June. The figures showed that there were 47 crimes recorded per 1,000 head of population – much lower than the European average of 70.4.
The report is compiled together with the Euro barometer, and shows that personal safety is not a consideration of the Spanish people as a whole. The reports also shows that this is the lowest rate for over 10 years and almost 2 clear points down on 2008.
The Minister also stated that changes to the Penal Code should be taken into account, and that newly classified crimes have added to these figures, for example domestic violence was previously classed as a ‘misdemeanour’, but is now classed as a crime.
Sceptics may be quick to point out that the report only takes into account ‘recorded crimes’.
