Eurozone travellers 'will have spare currency'

Fri 25th Jun 2010

Holidaymakers travelling to destinations in the eurozone this summer will find they have a lot more left over currency at the end of their trip, according to the Post Office.

Sarah Munro, head of travel money at the Post Office, said British expatriates and holidaymakers will benefit from the strengthening pound.

"The sterling has gained almost ten per cent against the euro since its weakest point this year (March) and UK holidaymakers will have 2.4 per cent more euro for their pounds than a year ago" she noted.

Her comments come as research from sunshine.co.uk found British travellers waste almost £800 million a year by not exchanging their foreign currency after returning from holiday.

Almost half (47 per cent) save their currency for their next trip abroad, but a third of these forget about their stash when the time comes.

"Selling back left over currency does not necessarily mean that they won't travel overseas again" Ms Munro noted, adding that changing currency back is more a case of "maximising available funds rather than holding on to foreign notes indefinitely".
