A 24 hour strike by RENFE Spanish railways is underway today - due to end at midnight. However, some services are still operational as the Ministry of development are insisting that a minimum 65% capacity is adhered to.
RENFE issued a statement blaming the unions, who have called over 50 strike days over the last 6 months, with today's being the 11th day where an actual strike has come into effect. They note that each day's strike action costs the company a million €, and even when the strike is called and then finally cancelled the costs incurred can be as much as 700,000 €.
The CGT and CCOO unions are protesting at the agreement signed between RENFE and the remaining unions on professional development in the company, which comes into effect on July 1.
