Expat radio shut down

Thu 22th Jul 2010

An English-language radio station broadcasting for the benefit of Spain's expatriate community has been shut down.

SunTalk, the radio station affiliated with the British tabloid, launched in April 2009 but has been closed as part of parent company News International's recent business review.

Presented by Sun columnist Jon Gaunt, the radio channel broadcast for three hours a day during the week and was received by expatriates living in the Canary Islands, Costa Blanca and other parts of Spain.

Broadcasting on FM and available through the Sun's website, SunTalk was said by the Guardian not to be part of News International's core business.

It is thought that management were considering taking the station to DAB digital radio, in a bid to launch the channel nationally, the Guardian reported.

The moves comes after Mr Gaunt was last week censured by media regulator Ofcom over comments made on-air in November 2008, when he referred to a guest councillor as a "health Nazi" on radio station TalkSport.
