A legal advisory body for Catalonia says that the Regional parliament can go ahead with a planned vote this Wednesday 28 July to discus the banning of bullfighting.
The body has ruled that any prohibition voted on by the parliament would not violate Spain or Catalonia's charters. The body was asked to study the issue by Spain's conservative opposition Popular Party, which is pro-bullfighting.
The proposed ban is part of an animal rights bill. If approved, Catalonia would become just the second Spanish region to ban bullfighting after the Canary Islands did so in 1991. Bullfighting is no longer a popular cultural activity in Catalonia with the Monumental in Barcelona the only major ring left in the region.
