Worldwide medical insurance 'could protect against hazards'

Thu 19th Aug 2010

Prospective expatriates are being warned not to assume they will be protected against expat health insurance issues and other hazards when they travel.

Director of financial company Travelex Ana Ansell commented that people relocating to popular hotspots such as Spain and the Greek islands can be as vulnerable to scams, fraud and health problems as they are in destinations such as Kenya and Tunisia.

"Holidaymakers should always do their homework before travelling and check sites like TripAdvisor or the FCO [Foreign & Commonwealth Office] for any current warnings, local customs, transport advice as well as local tourist offices" she explained.

This makes travellers more aware of all potential hazards in their destination that could result in them going to hospital and having to make a claim on their expat medical insurance.

Ms Ansell's comments come in light of research by Travelex, which revealed that Florida, Australia and Cyprus are the most dangerous destinations for travellers, based on several factors including the risk of credit card fraud, tourist scams and hazardous wildlife.
