Spanish electricity supply company Endesa is working with Nissan and Mitsubishi Corporation to promote electric vehicle use in the country.
It recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Nissan to set up a Direct Current (DC) quick charging network across Spain. Nissan and its alliance partner Renault have already been working with Endesa's parent company ENEL on Alternative Current (AC) quick charging technology. The DC technology will be based on the internationally accepted CHAdeMo standard for electric vehicle charging stations. The network will be compatible with Nissan’s Leaf electric vehicle, scheduled to go on sale in Spain in June 2011.
"We are committed to be the leading utility for electric vehicles in Spain and Latin America, and that is why we are partnering with the most important players in this market, such as Nissan. Together we will unite our forces to ensure that the quick charge network will be ready when electric cars are widely adopted" said Borja Prado, Endesa's chairman.
Elsewhere in Spain, the Renault-Nissan Alliance has also signed EV agreements with the City of Madrid, the City of Barcelona, the City Council of Sevilla and the regional governments of Andalucia and Castile-Leon.
Meanwhile, Endesa has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Mitsubishi Corporation to launch a feasibility study on the development of EV recharging infrastructure. The study will address the introduction of Vehicle to Grid technologies and electric vehicles; the establishment of EV related infrastructure; the expansion of operations in harmony with other energy management systems; and potential deployment to other areas such as the EU and Latin America. The study will run through the end of March 2011.
