Today's Fiesta parade brought scores of protesters who shouted insults at Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and called for him to step down as President of the government.
Chants of "Out, Out!" and "Zapatero Resign!" mixed with boos and whistling as the Socialist government leader arrived at a square on Madrid's Paseo de la Castellana boulevard for the parade.
Thousands of people had lined the sidewalks from early morning to watch the procession, which is held annually to celebrate Hispanic Day. It commemorates Christopher Columbus' arrival in the New World and is also armed forces day.
Around 3,000 Spanish soldiers took part - 1,000 less than last year. Spain's economic crisis and reduced defence budgets has seen the parade reduced in size in recent years.
Protests against Zapatero have become a common feature at the event in recent years, fueled greatly by the conservative opposition Popular Party accusations that Zapatero goes soft on Basque and Catalan nationalists and does not do enough to protect Spain's unity.
