World soccer governing body FIFA, has extended its investigation of the cash for vote saga to the World Cup bids of Spain and Qatar.
It has been reported that FIFA began investigation of the countries' bid and if irregularities are discovered, Spain and Qatar could be disqualified from the bidding process. Spain is one of the bidders for the 2018 World Cup, while Qatar is one of the five vying for the 2022 World Cup.
This investigation follows the suspension imposed on Adamu and Reynald Temarii from the Oceania region. The two were caught soliciting bribes in an undercover sting operation by the Sunday Times of London.
The Chairman of FIFA's ethics committee stated on Wednesday that they had acted to stamp out corruption in the bid process.
"The decision to suspend these two individuals was taken unanimously," said Claudio Sulser, chairman of the ethics committee.
"The ethics committee has zero tolerance for anything that violates its code of ethics in order to protect the good of FIFA and its image" he said. "We deem that it is crucial to protect the integrity of the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding process."
In a statement, FIFA said that a provisional suspension was justified "taking into account the gravity of the case and the likelihood that a breach of the FIFA statutes, code of ethics and disciplinary code has been committed".
