Planning 'important' when choosing expatriate medical insurance

Source: Expatriate Healthcare - Fri 22th Oct 2010

It is important to plan properly when choosing expatriate medical insurance cover, a report states.

According to the Telegraph, individuals may be able to save money on their expatriate medical insurance if they think about exactly what they want in advance.

The newspaper notes that individuals may be wise to opt for only the cover that they need, and cites the example of older women who have had a family still retaining maternity cover in their policies as an instance where cover has not been properly thought through.

Further to this, individuals may be well advised to buy their health insurance in the UK before they head abroad, the newspaper notes, pointing out that the provider will be regulated by British consumer protection rules.

Expats should remember, also, that they may not be able to access care on the NHS should they opt to return to the UK for treatment, so opting for a suitable health insurance policy may be a wise move, even for non-emergency care.
