Spain's Minster for Industry, Tourism and Commerce, announced earlier today that the new Airbus A350 XWB is expected to result in the creation of 4,450 jobs in Spain and a further 4.6 Billion Euros worth of much-needed investment for the country.
Miguel Sebastian was speaking at the Airbus factory in Toledo where he witnessed the manufacture of a component of the carbon fibre wing covering for the new Airbus A350, describing it as a significant step for Spanish industry as a whole.
Spain will share 11% stake in the new Airbus A350 XWB, as opposed to a samller an 8% stake in the current A380 built by the European consortium. The Minister said that this showed "recognition for Spanish technology in the aeronautical industry" and showed "what the people of Europe can do when they work together".
Spain's government has commited to invest a total of 543 million euros in the latest Airbus project over the next 4 years.
Production of the Airbus at the Toledo site will be coordinated with production in other plants such as Stade (Germany), Nantes (France) and Filton (UK). The initial test flights are scheduled for 2012, with delivery to airlines scheduled for 2013. 35 different airlines around the world have already placed 573 firm orders for the new aeroplane, but no Spanish airlines as yet.
The new Airbus A350 is being built with a higher percentage of carbon fibre than previous commercial aircraft, and can transport between 270 and 350 passengers, depending on the exact model in question.
