Spain's Supreme Court has Instructed the regional government of Catalunya to place a priority on teaching Castilian Spanish ahead of Catalán.
The court stated that the national language must be given at the very least equal footing with the regional language on the school curriculum, and parents of pupils will be able to request that their children are taught in Castilian as opposed to Catalán. The court also instructed that schools must communicate with parents in Castilian if this was requested.
Judgement was passed in the wake of an appeal by the parent of three children who had been denied their request of having their children taught in Castilian rather than Catalan four years ago.
