Spain's ATC's to be tried for Sedition

Source: El Pais - Thu 30th Dec 2010

Yesterday a lawsuit was officially lodged against Spain's air traffic controllers who staged a wildcat strike on the 3rd and 4th of December, for the crime of sedition, according to sources from the Public Prosecutor's Office.

The same source also told El Pais that the court action has been directed towards the air traffic controllers in general as opposed to just the 26 called to testify in court, or the 175 involved in the action. It is expected that a decision will be made over the next few days as to which judicial body will be charged with bringing the case against the controllers.

The attourney-general has already said how the Public Prosecutor's Office will seek jail terms of up to eight years under article 20 of Spain's Air Navigation Law.

"We are not talking about a labor problem because [the controllers] have not used legal avenues at any time, but staged a premeditated abandonment of airports causing grave damage to the citizens of Spain," He commented.
