Brits Escape UK Freeze For Winter Sun

Sat 8th Jan 2011

With the cold weather returning and generally causing all kinds of issues after Christmas it appears that Brits are escaping the big freeze with cheap flights to Spain.

According to the Daily Telegraph, travel websites have seen a 35% rise in searches for hotels, flights and holiday homes compared to this time a year ago. The searches are largely focussed on the Christmas and New Year period, suggesting two key things.

Firstly people are returning to holidays abroad rather than relying on the staycation and secondly that the cold weather is causing many families to consider some much needed sun rather than shovelling through the snow in the New Year.

According to the search results, Lanzarote and Tenerife, with their near guarantees of sunshine, have helped to boost the popularity of Spain by 12%. Another popular destination is Sharm el Sheikh, which like Lanzarote and Tenerife, promises a warm winter climate.

All three also share a well-respected beach culture in common. With this winter being confirmed as the coldest since 1981 it is little wonder that so many Brits are heading to warmer climes.

Cheap flights to Lanzarote are currently available from £39.99 one way and including taxes and cheap flights to Tenerife are currently available to Tenerife from £44.99 one way and including taxes from Jet2.com .
