Amazon has begun the initial stage of planning and designing a new site specifically targeting clients in Spain.
The world's largest online retailer has commenced with a recruitment drive to seek out Spanish-speaking managers to cover all areas of responsibility from Design to Merchandising. It is specifically looking for a marketing manager to broaden its customer base in Spain with efforts including e-mail campaigns, search engine optimisation, and a local associates programme to encourage individuals to link their websites and blogs to Amazon's site.
The business model will replecate the company's Italian site, which launched in November last year, and which is run by a management team split between Paris and the retailer's European headquarters in Luxembourg.
Amazon initially moved into the European market as seperate trading entity back in 1998, when it launched it's German and UK operations, but it is working towards a more centralised European business.
The launch of the Italian site followed Amazon's move into China in 2004 with its acquisition of Joyo.com.
Earlier this year Amazon assumed ownership of the UK-based DVD rental , Lovefilm, for £200m and in October of 2010 it paid almost $100m to acquire BuyVIP, a Spanish fasjion website serving a number of European countries.
