Enagas said demand by homes and businesses rose 4.3%, after adjusting for milder temperatures and differences in working days.
The operator noticed that gas-fired plants faced additional competition from coal as of Feb. 26, when a new law came into effect which requires plants to burn home-produced coal.
Gas demand has also fallen due to an increase in Spain's capacity to generate wind power, of which it is now the world's fourth-largest producer.
In February Spain had to import 99.3% of its gas supplies, mostly from Algeria and the majority in the form of liquefied natural gas, of which it is the world's third-largest importer.
Gas imports from Algeria may soar later this month, when the 8 billion cubic metre per year Medgaz pipeline is due to come onstream after several delays.
