For almost 12 months Spain's the Ministry of Industry has unofficially increased the range of mobile phone numbers by adding numbers beginning with 7. The previous numbering system for mobile phones - begin with a 6 - is expected to run out by 2012.
The Telecommunications Market Commission has already assigned 200,000 mobile phone numbers with a number 7 prefix, to an operator in order that they can do internal testing and, eventually, it will be able to pass these numbers forward to a controlled group of customers.
The Ministry of Industry has named the 1st of October of this year as the deadline by which the new numbers are to be fully operational.
Between 31st March and 31st October 2012, telephone operators are required to inform their customers of the availability of these new phone numbers on all their bills and invoices. The additional numbers should not affect any existing numbers and will simply be added to the exisiting list of numbers.
