A number of Spanish newspaper have revealed that Primie Minister Juan Luis Rodriguez Zapatero is about to announce his intention not to run for a third term in office in the national elections to be held in May 2012.
Until now the Socialist leader has kept quiet about his intentions, stating how only 2 party members were aware of them. It is expected that the PM will formally announce his decision on April 2nd, as he will be attending a summit with other EU leaders later in the week and it has been speculated that he is wanting to make such an announcement when there is an optimistic future expected.
Spain's current Deputy Prime Minister has been rumoured as being the candidate to replace Zapatero, however, elections will be held within the PSOE party to find a new leader.
Zapatero is expected remain in office until the end of his term, and will continue as the Secretary General of the Socialist Party until a party congress is held following the coming General Election.
