With just three weeks to go before Spain's local elections, a poll commissioned by El Pais reveals how the right-wing Popular Party is expected to govern the region of Madrid for a third consecutive term, with 75 seats - 10 more than is needed for an absolute majority, and 8 more than they currently hold. The Socialist PSOE party will be pushed to match their results in the previous elections when they took just 33.5% of the vote, which would give them 41 seats - one less than they have at the moment.
The PP's victory will depend upon the leadership of Esperanza Aguirre. She is the most popular candidate in the region with high ratings across the region According to the poll, 58% of Madrileños feel she has done a good job. Aguirre has a considerable lead in the race with her opponent, Tomás Gómez. Of the two, Madrileños believe she has a better understanding of regional issues (57% as compared to 13%), she inspires greater confidence (46% over 29%) and has the clearest ideas overall (57% over 18%).
