A recent study on Immigration and the Welfare sysetm in Spain, commissioned by the Fundación la Caixa has arrived at a surprising, and somewhat alarming conclusion.
Jaime Lanaspa, the director general of the organisation, presented the results which revealed how non-spaniards make up 12% of the population, however only account for 5.6% of the areas covered by social services, mainly Education, Health, Pensions and other benefit payments.
Even illegal immigrants, or those working in Spain illegally, contribute to the economy of the country indirectly, as they still spend money on products and services and generally allow those living and working here legally to move towards better paid employment.
Lanapsa concluded that the reality was that immigrants actually contribute a great deal of nett wealth to the economy, as opposed to being a drain on resources, which the many members of the Spanish press have suggested over recent years.
