Ryanair yesterday said that it may reduce the number of flights to and from Spain over a dispute concerning over 1 Million euros worth of fines.
Ryanair Chief Executive, Michael O'Leary, wrote to the Spanish Minister for Tourism regarding in excess of 60 fines that have been imposed on the airline over the last two years. The letter stated: "Ryanair will not pay these disproportionate or discriminatory fines and should this result in enforcement orders, we will then begin the process of cutting."
A consumer group in Spain, FACUA, have described the letter as blackmail, and if carried out looks set to be a considerable blow to the thousands of Brits who regularly travel between the two countries.
Ryanair defended their position by saying hoiw the fines were as a result of their allegedly breaking 'made up laws'.
The airline was expected to carry 30 million passengers to or from Spain this year, which would make it the busiest carrier to the country, and currently operates over 500 routes to 23 of the country's airports.
