The morning after Spain's local elections, and every indication is that the ruling PSOE party suffered the avalanche against them that they reportedly expected.
In the previous elections, held in 2007 the PSOE managed to cling on to power on a local level, by a reported margin of around 150'000 votes, whereas this year the tide had turned against them, and in the favour of the PP, by a margin of 2 million votes.
Out of the 8112 municipalities in Spain, the PP took 3,317 Town Halls, with the PSOE managing just 1,860. The remaining Town Halls went to a variety of local and /or Independent parties.
In terms of the number of votes being placed on a local level, the PP received 8,474,031 and the PSOE 6.276,087.
The total number of votes placed overall was 22,971,350, with 11,710,862 abstentions, 389,506 Nullified votes and 584'012 Blank votes.
Prime Minister Zapatero attributed the high losses suffered by his party, together with the significant number of abstentions, to the situation surrounded the overall economy of the country and the level of unemployment currently see in the country.
