Following their notable victory in the local and regional elections over the weekend, the leader of the PP has said how the party is already preparing for next year's general election> Furthermore, Mariano Rajoy, has called made a demand for the election to be brought forward, claiming that neither the Prime Minster or the Government has the ability to bring Spain's economic woes under control.
With the elections out of the way, the PSOE party members are now focussing on the issue of electing a new party leader. The two front-runners at this stage being the Deputy Prime Minister, Alfredo Pérez-Rubalcaba, and the Minister for Defence, Carmé Chacón. Both were expected to face each other in primary elections, however there have een suggestions that many in the party wish Rubalcaba to be the only candidate in order to both show a sign of strength and unity within the party and to the general public alike, and to avoid the preliminary selection process.
