Barcelona could make sporting history for Spain

Thu 26th May 2011

Saturday's Champions league final at Wembley, between Manchester United and Barcelona, could result in a significant moment in Spanish sporting history.

If Barcelona lift the cup it will make Spain home to both the European Cup, the World Cup and the Champion's League at the same time - something that no other country has been able to achieve.

Things did not look too promising for Barcelona earlier this week following news that the weekend's icelandic volcano eruption may cause severe disruption to flights, and may result in the closure of certain areas of European airspace.

The team had originally planned to fly to London on Thursday, but decided to change their travel plans and travel on Tuesday to insure against any disruption. Perhaps Pep Guardiola, the team manager, could be forgiven for being overly cautious - last year the team fell victim to the same 'curse'. Barcelona were due to play Milan in the first of two legs of the semi-final of the Champion's league in Sampadoria, Italy, when a different Icelandic volcano erupted. The disruption caused by the April 2010 volcano crippled european airspace for over a week and caused thousands of flights across europe to be cancelled. The team were forced to make a dash across Spain and France and then down through Italy in order to play, where they were defeated 3-1. Barcelona were unable to rectify the score sheet on the return leg weeks later and as a result left the competition after losing 3-2 on aggregate.

Millions of football fans across the world are expected to tune in or watch the Champions League Final live online this Saturday, 28th May 2011 at Wembley - Kick off 7:45pm Local Time

Barcelona last faced Manchester united in the champion's league finals two years ago, winning 2-0, but Pep Guardiola isn't letting anything go to his head and retains a respect for his veteran opposite number, Alex Ferguson. "To go on winning over a long period of time, to go through two, three, four cycles of renewing a team and keep winning, that is greatness. It's an honour to be facing him again."

With both managers taking their team to victory in the champions league on previous occassions (Ferguson twice, Guardiola twice as a player and once as a manager), both have the passion - and ability to do it again this year.
