With their 3-1 defeat in the final of the UEFA Champion's league cup final on saturday night Manchester United were unable to break the spell - not only of their nemesis, Barcelona, but of the hold that the Spaniards seemingly have against English clubs as far as playing in Europe in concerned.
Saturday's resounding victory for Barcelona is now the fifth successive win in 10 years where a Spanish club have defeated an English club in the finals of one of the European cups.
Champions League 2011 : Barcelona 3-1 Manchester United
Europa League 2010 - Atletico Madrid 2-1 Fulham
Champions League 2009 - Barcelona 2-0 Manchester United
Champions League 2006 - Barcelona 2-1 Arsenal/p>
UEFA Cup 2006 - Middlesbrough 0-4 Sevilla
Only Liverpool have been able to break the spell with their 5-4 victory over Alaves back in the UEFA cup final of 2001.
Whoever the winners of next year's cup may be, one thing is certain - now that Spain are holders of the World cup, the European cup and the Champions league Spanish football is at an all time high. The last time the previously named European Champion Clubs' cup was won by a defending champion was by Milan in 1990. Could Barcelona become the first team to successfully defend the title of the UEFA Champions League ?
