Spain's Ministry of Labour today reported that the number of people submitting claims for unemployment benefits dropped last month by almost 80,000. This was the second consecutive monthly decrease and a hopefully can be taken as one sign of an economic recovery.
The number of those still receiving benefits currently stands at just under 4.19 million, and follows a decrease of 64'000 claimants in April.
However, Spain's unemployment statistics (as opposed to number of benefit claims) are calculated and released seperately, and at the last count in March stood at a eurozone high of 21.3%, with more than 4.9 million people registered as being unemployed. The numbers vary because there are a number of unemployed in Spain who are no longer eligible to claim any benefits.
