In the wake of the Spanish cucumber crisis, following the incorrect accusations from Germany last week, Spain is demanding 100% compensation due to the financial hardship that both the Farmers and the country's agriculture in general have fallen victim to.
Early estimates have put the financial cost of the various bans on imports of Spanish produce at 200 Million euros, although the true cost may not be known for some time yet.
Earlier today the European Commission promised 150 million euros in aid by way of compensation for farmers and producers, with the EU Agricultural Commissioner, Dacian Ciolos, noting that this aid fund will be additional to compensation already agreed by the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and anything agreed individually between member states.
However, this move has angered many members of the EU, who are being forced to contribute to compensation payments to cover the effects that Germany's accusations have brought about. The UK alone will contribute £16.6 Million to the compensation package for Spain for a crisis that they have played no part in.
Germany, the largest Economy in the EU, seems to be leaving fellow member states to rectify the problems that they alone have caused.
