Malaga cucumber exporter sues

Mon 13th Jun 2011

Frunet, the Spanish Fruit and Vegetable export company based in Malaga, is issuing a private lawsuit against the German authorities for losses of over 1 million euros of produce that it was forced to destroy. Health official initially blamed the E.coli outbreak on the company's organic cucumbers.

Spain as whole has agreed not to seek further damages from Germany, given that the EU has agreed a compensation package of 210 Million euros and that Germany has agreed to hep rebuild confidence in Spanish produce.

Meanwhile, the number of deaths caused by the outbreak has risen to 35, with a further 812 seriously ill in Hospital.

Whilst it is looking increasing likely that the organic bean sprouts grown in the Hamburg nursery are to blame, tests are still ongoing and no official statement has been given pinpointing the exact source of the bacterial infection.
