Spain's Ministry of the Interior reported yesterday that Police had arrested 20 people under suspicion of defrauding immigrants, who they sold fake documents to in order that they could legalise their residential status. All of the immigrants in question had paid between 500 and 4,000 euros for the documents.
The alleged fraudsters also offered Spanish citizens false documents to enable them to apply for unemployment payments amongst other state benefits.
The enterprise was run from an office in Toledo, and headed by one businessman together with his girlfriend and his daughter, and believed to use contacts in Africa and Latin America to convince people to use their services.
