Ryanair defamation claim overturned

Wed 6th Jul 2011

It is just one week ago that Ryanair tried to obtain a gaging order from the Spanish courts against FACUA.

The Spanish Consumer Rights Association, it was claimed, had repeatedly claimed that the airline abused its passengers, took advantage of them and generally 'Didn't care about them'.

Ryanair insisted that the association desisted from making such claims and immediately removed all such statements from all publications, websites and social media networks.

However, the judge in Sevilla considered that Ryanair were unable to prove that the claims made about Ryanair's treatment of their passengers were in any way untrue. The judge went on to say how the claim of FACUA launching a targeted smear campaign against the airline was unfounded, and that they had acted in accordance with their role as a consumers association in protecting the interests of passengers.

Ryanair have been awarded five days to appeal against the decision, or accept the ruling and pay all costs associated with the case.
