With the country's general election on the horizon, Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero yesterday unveiled his newly reshuffled cabinet that will carry the ruling PSOE party to success.
The measure follows Friday's resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, to allow him to concentrate on camapigning fior the PSOE and preparing to lead the party beyond any victory he may be able to secure, and the resuffle reallocated the three major cabinet roles that he held.
Spain's secretary of state for Security, jurist Antonio Camacho, succeeds Rubalcaba as the Minister of the Interior, while Economy Minister Elena Salgado has been appointed deputy premier will chair Cabinet meetings in the prime minister's absence, Zapatero announced earlier today.
Development Minister Jose Blanco, a long-time Zapatero ally who managed the PSOE's successful 2004 and 2008 campaigns, will take over Rubalcaba's role as official government spokesperson, the PM said.
Rubalcaba is a PSOE party veteran who served in the 1982-1996 Cabinet under Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez. His opponent in next year's election, PP leader Mariano Rajoy, lost to Zapatero in both the 2004 and 2008 elections.
