People seeking foreign employment 'should prepare'

Source: Expatriate Healthcare - Wed 13th Jul 2011

Potential Expatriates who wish to find employment abroad should ensure that they are prepared.

This is according to Atiyah Wazir-Meadows, online editor for graduate career guide Eurograduate, who noted that foreign cultures may have different expectations for documents such as CVs and cover letters, which individuals should research before moving.

For example, in Spain a photograph is expected for many job application, whereas working hours may be different in other countries, she declared.

In hotter European countries for instance, it is encouraged that workers have a rest in the middle of the day when it gets hot and many businesses close for a brief period at this time.

It is also worth finding out the employment rights of the nation, such as whether immigrants need work permits or receive healthcare.

People may also wish to discover whether it is appropriate to call colleagues by their forenames and other issues, such as what language and clothing is inappropriate for a business setting, before commencing their employment.
