Budget airline, Ryanair, has confirmed that it will cut a further 21 routes from Girona airport due to a lack of an agreement on subsidies from the Catalan Government.
The move is expected to result in a fall of passenger numbers travelling to Girona over the year from 2.6 million to 1.3 million.
This downscaling comes on top of the 18 discontinued routes announced in February, due once again to the airline being unable to find an agreement with the regional government on the subject of subsidies.
The Deputy President of Ryanair spoke at a press conference in Barcelona earlier today, and estimated that 1,000 jobs will be lost from October of this year when the full effect of the cuts will be known. He called on the Region to honor the commitments made with the previous regional administration, beore the regional elections of December last year.
Currently the airline serves 46 destinations from Girona, but this will drop to 25 as of October, with flights to Madrid, Milan, Sevilla, Brussels and London amongst the casualties.
