Spanish airport baggage handlers have announced two 24 hours strikes will take place at all of the country's airports on both the 18th and 26th of August.
The strike dates have been planned to coincide with the the Pope's visit to Madrid for the World Youth day to place maximum pressure on the Government to find a resolution.
The workers are represented by the USO, UGT and CCOO Unions who are taking action due to no resolution being found on previous grievances - principally, the planned redundancies in the sector and the issuance of new baggage handling licences.
All of the baggage handling companies currently working in the country, together with the services that they offer will be affected, including : the handling of luggage, check in staff, disabled assistance, and those who operate the air-bridges to the planes in addition to bulk cargo services.
A meeting between Unions chiefs and the airports authorities is planned for tomorrow, where it is hoped that an agreement can be reached that will prevent the strikes from going ahead - or at least, to agree a skeleton service over what are traditionally the busiest weeks of the summer.
