The Football league strike provisionally planned for this weekend and next will go ahead following a meeting being held between the Spanish Football League (LFP) and the Players' Unions (AFE), which failed to find agreement earlier today.
The Players are essentially protesting over the fact that many of the country's 42 top flight clubs owe over 72 Million Euros to more than 100 players in unpaid wages. The Union is demanded that this is resolved, but furthermore that a fund is put in place which clubs must pay into as a kind of insurance policy that players will still get paid in the event of future cash flow problems.
Over half of Spanish football clubs in the top two divisions have been in administration at some point over the last two years, and with 50 million euros still being owed to players from last season, it is clear that something needs to be done.
The threat of relegation to face clubs with such financial difficulties was suggested, however, in practice relegating 50% of all clubs at the same time would not have the desired effect. Equally so, the clubs claim that they simply can not pay money that they do not have.
