Ryanair has called upon the Generalitat of Catalonia to stop "wasting taxpayer money in continuing to pay Spanair to reduce flights, losing passengers and incurring huge losses, who are clearly not a viable commercial airline. "
In a statement, the Irish low-cost airline has called for the 'illegal support' for Spanair to end, and for the government to call an end to the 56 Million euros in compensation that they have already paid Spanair for their falling passenger number.
The statement continued, "High ticket prices for Spanair flights have caused passenger numbers to fall from over 20 million in 2007 to just 13 million last year, while Ryanair's low fares have resulted in a growth of 11 to 27 million passengers over the same period. "
Ryanair is currently the largest airline in Spain.
Ryanair's spokesman, Stephen McNamara, announced that "Spanair is kept afloat artificially, as the Government continues to spend more and more money from taxpayers in the airline in crisis, and what taxpayers get in return is the reduction in passenger numbers and routes. "
McNamara concluded that, "the taxpayers' money should not reward failure, so Ryanair are calling upon the Government to cancel all aid to Spanair. If Spanair reduced their costs, reduced fares they would see an increase in passenger numbers and no longer require the government to keep the airline afloat with taxpayers money.
