Spain's National Geographic Institute (IGN) and PEVOLCA have confirmed that an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.9 hit the Island of El Hierro this morning.
The quake was felt at 07.46 hours to the North-West of Frontera, and at a depth of 22km. It is also the largest earthquake recorded in on El Hierro since the eruption ot the submarine volcano off the coast of La Restinga, on the opposite side of the Island, three weeks ago.
Residents of the towns of Isora, Guarazoca, Mocanal and Tigaday also felt the activity.The seismic activity on the Island has intensified over the last few days and are centred in an area 12km to the North-Northwest of Frontera and at depths of 15 - 20km.
A reports published this weekend by scientists from the University of Cadiz study ground deformations on the Island, showing how the south of the island, where the volcanic eruption has occurred, has seen deformation slow down, whereas ground deformations the North-West of the Island has increased.
As of this morning, the total number of seismic activities recorded in this recent earthquake swarm, which began on July 17th, has reached 10'615.
